Nervous Patients

If you are nervous patient or have a dental phobia, well done you’ve made the first step. The team at Jordan Dental are highly trained to deal with patients who are anxious about having dental treatment and understand that overcoming your fear is stressful. At Jordan Dental we ensure that all of our patients are as relaxed and pain-free as possible during dental treatments. We are confident that we can get you on the right journey. In certain circumstances the best way to achieve this is by using a sedative to reduce anxiety and to help you relax while you receive your dental treatment. We will advise you as to whether this is a suitable course based upon your specific treatment and level of anxiety.

Sedation is an ideal solution for those of us who suffer from dental phobia. It is used by dentists to perform dental treatment on patients in a stress and worry free way, and helps many patients overcome their fear of visiting the dentist.

There are various forms of sedation including IV (intravenous) sedation, and Inhalation sedation. The treatment does not cause clients to lose consciousness and it is not the same as general anaesthetic. It simply induces a relaxed state and prevents patients from experiencing any pain. Patients who have been sedated will often not remember having treatment.

The type and dose of sedative given depends on the procedure you are going to have and how anxious you are about it.

The 2 types of sedation we offer:

1. Intravenous (IV) Sedation (also known as ‘twilight sleep’)
2. Inhalation Sedation (also known as “laughing gas”, “happy gas”, nitrous oxide, “gas and air”)

Intravenous (IV) Sedation

Even people who do not feel anxious about dental treatment may have sedation for procedures, which can be uncomfortable such as extractions (removing a tooth) or certain lengthy procedures.

Intravenous sedation involves giving you a small injection of a sedative drug through a plastic tube (cannula), which is placed into a vein in either your hand or arm. The sedative drug will make you feel relaxed during your treatment.

Intravenous sedation is not the same as a general anaesthetic, which puts you to sleep. However, many people do not remember anything about their treatment.

Inhalation Sedation

Inhalation Sedation is a safe and simple procedure that is used for patients who are nervous or gag easily to make their treatment more comfortable. It uses a non-allergenic and non-irritating gas that is inhaled through a nasal hood , the same as women might have during childbirth.
